International Scientific Conference "Buddhism in a Changing World" Held as Part of the Second Buddhist Forum
Session No. 3 was dedicated to the discussion platform "History of Buddhism." Representatives from India and Russia participated, discussing relevant issues in Buddhist studies, including in English.
Participants in the session learned about Buddhism in the main Buddhist centers of Russia (Buryatia, Tuva, and Kalmykia), as well as Buddhism on Sakhalin and the indigenous population that lives there and practices this religion. They became acquainted with Buddhist temples and schools.
The session participants also discussed early Buddhism in the history of the Buryat-Mongols and why, among all globally recognized religions, Buddhism did not become the dominant characteristic of any civilization.
The main topics included the history of Buddhism, contemporary issues in studying and preserving Buddhist heritage, Buddhism in the political process of modern Mongolia, and Buddhist missionaries in Central Asia.
