The II International Buddhist Forum in Buryatia will be dedicated to the 260th anniversary of the Pandito Khambo Lama institution

The II International Buddhist Forum, which will be held in Buryatia from August 12 to 14, will be dedicated to the 260th anniversary of the Pandito Khambo Lama institution that includes all heads of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha in Russia (BTSR). This news was announced by Irina Dorzhieva, Deputy Chief of Information Policy, Public Relations and Public Projects Chief Executive and Government Administration in the Republic of Buryatia, at a press conference dedicated to the forum and held at the MIA Russia Today international multimedia press center.
– Of course, most of our discussions within the framework of the forum will be devoted to the 260th anniversary of the Pandito Khambo Lama institution in Russia, which will be celebrated in September 2024. A conference will be held before the celebration. During the celebration, the new Tsogchen Dugan in the Ivolginsky Datsan and the monument to Catherine II, whose decree actually recognized Buddhism in Russia, will be opened to the public for the first time", Irina Dorzhieva said.

The institution of Pandito Khambo Lamas was approved in Russia by Decree of Catherine II 260 years ago, in 1764. The decree officially recognised Buddhist religion in the Russian Empire. The first Pandito Khambo Lama was Damba-Dorjo Zayaev. The position of Pandito Hambo Lama is elective.

The first International Buddhist Forum “Traditional Buddhism and the Challenges of Modernity” was held in Buryatia on August 17-19, 2023. It was attended by more than 600 people, including 150 international participants from 13 countries of the world. The forum was organized by the Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia, the Government of Buryatia and the Foundation for the Promotion of Buddhist Education and Research with the support of the Roscongress Foundation.
