Olga Timofeeva, Chairperson of the State Duma Committee on the Development of Civil Society, Public and Religious Associations of the Russian Federation, addressed the participants of the II International Buddhist Forum "Traditional Buddhism and Modern Challenges."
"Dear participants of the Second International Buddhist Forum!
The world is going through a dangerous period of confrontation. Our spiritual values, intercultural and interreligious connections are also being tested for strength. We must not succumb to the provocations of ill-wishers who seek to destabilize the situation, sow discord among peoples, and instill immoral ideals in the minds of the younger generation.
These are new global challenges for all of us. Clergy, scholars, politicians, cultural and public figures—all who cherish the history and spiritual traditions of peoples—must unite and provide a firm response.
On behalf of the State Duma Committee on the Development of Civil Society, Public and Religious Associations, I would like to express special gratitude to the followers of Buddhism, representatives of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia. Today, Buddhists in Russia are defending the Fatherland with weapons in hand, courageously upholding our multiethnic Russian world in the area of the special military operation. Several vehicles purchased with funds from datsans and believers, tons of food, special clothing, and equipment have been sent to the special military operation zone by Buddhists. Enormous support is being provided to the fighters.
Russia is a common home for many peoples. We value our cultural diversity and advocate for dialogue, mutual respect, and the strengthening of ties between the peoples of the world.
Your Forum is aimed at the development of Buddhist culture, philosophy, religious consciousness, education, and the strengthening of ties with Asian countries that practice Buddhism. I wish you productive work and significant results in all these important areas!" the welcoming address states.
It is worth noting that the II International Buddhist Forum "Traditional Buddhism and Modern Challenges" is taking place in Buryatia from August 12 to 14, 2024, on the initiative of the Head of Buryatia, Alexey Tsydenov, with the support of President Vladimir Putin. The forum will serve as a new platform for international dialogue and comprehensive discussion of issues related to the development of Buddhism, Buddhist culture, philosophy, and practice, as well as promote the development of scientific, educational, and cultural cooperation between Buddhist organizations from various countries. The forum will be attended by representatives from 15 countries: Bangladesh, Belarus, Brazil, Bhutan, Vietnam, India, Cambodia, China, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Japan.
The organizers of the forum are the Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia, the Government of the Republic of Buryatia, the Foundation for the Promotion of Buddhist Education and Research, with the support of the Roscongress Foundation. > Ирина Дамбаева: 🖼 Photo
