Lama Choydag Badmazhapov's explanatory dictionary translation project has reached an international level

The translation is carried out by ten teachers of the D.D. Zayaev "Dashi Choinkhorlin" Buddhist University in Ivolginsky Datsan, who studied at the Gomang Datsan in India. Geshe Lharamba Lobsang Kaichok, an expert in the Tibetan language, came to Buryatia from Gomang Datsan to help with the translation. Lama Otgon Bayar from Mongolia; Maksarzhav, a teacher of the Mongolian language at Dashi Choinkhorlin University; and Burin Jargal, the plenipotentiary representative of the Khambo Lama of Mongolia, are also helping with the translation into Mongolian.

The work on translating Lama Choydag Badmazhapov's explanatory dictionary of the Tibetan language "Terms are Clear Words" into Mongolian and Russian began on December 27, 2024. As of February 13, 2025, 750 words of the main text and 1,350 words of Lama Choydag Badmazhapov's commentary have been translated. Lamas of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia, Mongolia, India and the researchers concerned are working under the leadership of Pandito Khambo Lama Damba Ayusheyev, Head of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha.

Lobsang Kaichok, who arrived from India, specializes in translating and recording lectures by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and is considered the most powerful scholar of the Tibetan language and grammar in the world. He holds Geshe Lharamba title, the highest Buddhist monastic degree in the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. It is equivalent to a PhD in the Western academic community.

- I am very happy for those lamas and sponsors who are involved in the translation of Lama Badmazhapov's explanatory dictionary. Years and centuries will pass, and this dictionary will be very necessary in spreading the Teachings of the Buddha. I am sure that this work will enrich the vocabulary of our lamas and enhance their knowledge of Tibetan, Mongolian and Russian languages. Just imagine how many people will understand our Teaching better because Choydag Lama collected these 26 thousand words from Ganjur, the words of the Buddha's teacher, and from Danjur, the thoughts of the great wisemen. I think Lama Badmazhapov knew that it would be a great honor for those who take part in the translation. So don't delve into ignorance and don't hide from your happiness," said the head of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha.

During this work, the prayer services that lamas traditionally chant in Tibetan will be translated into Russian and Mongolian, and their sacred meaning can be more clearly conveyed to the world community.

Khambo Lama considers that the translation may last for three years.

- By translating Lama Choydag Badmazhapov's explanatory dictionary, we enter the interesting world of Tibetan words. Yesterday, for example, the famous word "Dashi" was translated, which we usually translate as "өлзий – үлзы", meaning “peace and happiness”. So in the commentary of Lama Choydag, this word has three more meanings, such as: "мягмар” - “Tuesday”, "буян" - “benevolence” and "хотол чуулган"-”perfect”. See how many mysteries are there in this great word! Now there is a question which of these 4 qualities a person named "Dashi" should possess? And Pandito Hambo Lama Dashi-Dorzho Itigelov can now bless you for one or more of them", emphasized Pandito Khambo Lama Damba Ayusheev.

Choydag Dagva Badmazhapov was born in Bayin Bulag area (now Kyakhta district of Buryatia), studied in Tibet, defended his Lharamba Lama title (Doctor of Buddhist Philosophy) and excelled in his knowledge of Buddhism and the Tibetan language. The explanatory dictionary of the Tibetan language "Terms are Clear Words", compiled in 1946, is recognized by the world academic community as the best explanatory dictionary of the Tibetan language, its six editions were published in China and it is in great demand among philologists all over the world. This dictionary is a reference book for many generations of researchers and lamas.
