New Members Join the Buddhist Education Consortium

On Tuesday, August 13, during the Second International Buddhist Forum “Traditional Buddhism and Modern Challenges,” Aldar Damdinov, Chairman of the Buddhist Education Consortium and Rector of the Buryat State University named after Dorzhi Banzarov, signed agreements with Oksana Martynenko, Rector of the Zabaikal State University, and Elena Perova, Rector of the East Siberian State Institute of Culture.

“Just last week, the Buddhist Education Consortium held a meeting where the decision was made to include two new members,” said Aldar Damdinov.

The Buddhist Education Consortium, which includes the Buryat State University, the Kalmyk State University, the Tuva State University, the Dashi Choinhorlin Buddhist University, and the Agin Buddhist Academy, was established in August 2023 during the First International Buddhist Forum “Traditional Buddhism and Modern Challenges” to advance Buddhist education and Buddhist studies in Russia and worldwide.

“Buddhist studies at Zabaikal State University have been ongoing for many years, but we are exceptionally grateful to Buryatia, specifically to Aleksey Tsydenov and the Buryat State University, for the remarkable initiative of holding this forum and creating the Consortium. This is a significant step that allows us to establish a continuous system of Buddhist education and research through integration. We share much in common with the world, and Buddhism helps us build traditional values in the younger generation and cultivate true deep-rooted patriotism. The Consortium is a very open organization; we have been collaborating throughout the year, and today this collaboration is formalized and institutionalized. This is a crucial step for us and will aid in the further development of education for peace and creation,” stated Oksana Martynenko.

“We have a long-standing tradition of studying the culture and art of Buddhism, given our location in Ulan-Ude, Republic of Buryatia. Our students come from regions such as Tuva Republic, Yakutia, Zabaikal Territory, and Irkutsk Oblast. Our students are deeply engaged with Buddhism. This subject is integrated into the educational programs we offer: decorative arts, cultural studies, and folk art. Every program includes a component on Buddhism, which is particularly important for nurturing the younger generation,” noted Elena Perova.

Throughout the year, the Consortium has implemented several joint educational and scientific projects. Aldar Damdinov highlighted the creation of joint three-way educational programs in the fields of "Law," "Chemistry," "Economics," and "Psychological and Pedagogical Education" between Buryat State University, Kalmyk State University, and Tuva State University. The Buryat State University has established a Department of Buddhist Philosophy based at the Dashi Choinhorlin Buddhist University. New educational programs in "Buddhist Philosophy" and "Buddhology" have been launched at Buryat State University and Kalmyk State University.

Students from Buryat State University, Kalmyk State University, and Tuva State University have participated in the Young Buddhologist School organized by Tuva State University at Lake Chagytai and in the Media School “MediaMate” organized by Buryat State University at Baikal with support from the Rosmolodyozh grant.

The Second International Buddhist Forum “Traditional Buddhism and Modern Challenges” is being held in Buryatia from August 12-14, 2024, initiated by Head of Buryatia Aleksey Tsydenov and supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The forum has become a new platform for international dialogue and comprehensive discussions on the development of Buddhism, Buddhist culture, philosophy, and practice, fostering scientific, educational, and cultural cooperation among Buddhist organizations from different countries. The forum is attended by representatives from 15 countries: Bangladesh, Belarus, Brazil, Bhutan, Vietnam, India, Cambodia, China, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Japan.

The forum is organized by the Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia, the Government of the Republic of Buryatia, the Foundation for the Promotion of Buddhist Education and Research, with the support of the Roscongress Foundation.
